For a mixtape that supposedly takes its name from talking
nonsense (and the illicit liquor), Moonshine’s title is almost a
paradox. On the collaboration between Korean rapper Kim Ximya
and American producer Sondaehyun, rather than create a
fallacy, the two artists are at their most candid.

Usually, when the two are talked about, their names are an accessory to
something more. With Kim Ximya, it’s about Korean hip hop duo XXX,
of which he is a part. With Sondaehyun, who is more widely known as D.Sanders,
it’s about his production for American rapper Isaiah Rashad.
But with Moonshine, the two have their own limelight and do it with
their own name.

This is particularly important for LA based Sondaehyun, who uses his Korean
name on the mixtape, a nod to his half-Korean heritage. It also helps
strengthen his Korean musical identity on top of singing to Korean label, BANA
(Beasts and Natives Alike) last year.

But Moonshine also gives the two artists a chance to shine and not
be overshadowed. They’re not part of a group, they’re not producing for others.
Moonshine is theirs. So in a way, the mixtape is more like a band’s
record in the sense that there is equal importance placed on both the rap and
the production. But this doesn’t stop it from sounding like a hip hop record.

Sondaehyun creates a lush and atmospheric soundscape consistent throughout
the mixtape. While varying slightly with hints of trap becoming stronger on
tracks like ‘Closecall’, there’s an emphasis on soul and jazzy sampled fuelled
beats. Like on the opening of ‘Process’ which sounds straight out of a 40s
soundtrack. Or even on the lead single, ‘Flowers’, which certifies why the
world needs more harp samples.

On the other hand, Kim Ximya’s rap, which flows seamless from English to
Korean, is nasally and uncompromising as ever. Although with Kim Ximya,
explicit lyrics are customary, Moonshine’s lyrical explicitness moves
beyond sex and curses.

The opener ‘Moonshine’ sees Kim Ximya go off on a tangent, talking about the
mixtape and musical ambitions in his softest and most intimate flow yet. While
at the end, he utters in English “Anyways, welcome to Moonshine” almost as an
afterthought as if he remembers someone is listening. It’s a perfect set up for
the mood of the whole tape; an unfiltered reality.

On Moonshine Kim Ximya and Sondaehyun give each other room to
create a raw yet understated sense of reality. Sondaehyun adds warmth and
intimacy to Kim Ximya’s rap. While Kim Ximya adds a stark intensity to
Sondaehyun’s production. These two elements come together, creating a
beautifully nuanced and unreserved mixtape, regardless if it’s really nonsense
or not.
Though it's already 2017, here are 10 of my Korean hip hop songs of 2016, in no particular order.

Flight Attendant – XXX. The duo push the boundaries of hip hop with the almost

Korean rapper, Keith Ape brings his underwater trap style to Australia for the
first time in Melbourne.

The two support acts, Melbourne locals, DJ Slick P and Nico
Ghost, work hard hype up the crowd, playing all the right tunes to raise the
room’s anticipation and energy levels.

When Keith Ape comes on, the diverse crowd of Asian, black and white kids absolutely lose it. Matching
their energy, Ape bounds on stage, though noticeably lacking the huge rapper
ego. Breaking the distinction between artist and audience, Ape consciously makes
the effort to high-five all the hands outstretched towards him.

Accompanied by DJ Matthew Law, Ape also shares his stage
with fellow Cohort crew member, Bryan Chase, for the whole night; even
graciously allowing Chase to perform a song of his own.

Over the top of the customary trap style of rolling 808 high
hats and low, ominous beats, Chases’ higher rap style contrasts to Ape’s gritty
and rich tone. And Ape’s underwater fixation is constantly referenced with killer
whale calls scattered throughout the set.

With most of his catalogue boasting features, majority of the
setlist of tracks from his mixtape and recent collabs, is cut down. One
exception is a brand-new “week old” collaboration with Japanese rapper Anarchy,
played in full.

But tonight’s highlight, of course, is the finale of ‘<span lang="KO" style="font-family: "malgun gothic" , sans-serif; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Malgun Gothic"; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">잊지<span lang="KO" style="font-family: "batang" , serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Batang;">마 (It G
Ma)’. Hysteria ensues and phones start recording as the whole audience screams
along in Korean and to the famous hook: "It g ma! Underwater squad!"

With the frenzy of limbs and constant jumping, there is an
intense synergy between the artist and audience. The two feed of the energy of
the other, uniting as a mass of youth elation.

In this sea of movement, it’s clear, tonight is not about perfect
renditions. It’s about a united experience. Not only does Keith Ape live up to
his hype, he’ll get you hyped and damn sweaty too.

Beenzino’s 12 is
almost not a hip hop album. Musically, the Korean rapper’s first full length

His slightly haunting vocals, and silly, yet ridiculously catchy lyrics, will have you lost for words in a psychedelic dream whirlpool.

Check out a brilliant title track from his solo debut album ‘Forever Dolphin Love.’

wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-23018609463159623802012-03-05T23:27:00.001-08:002012-03-05T23:27:39.748-08:00‘Meeting Waterboy’–Mink Mussel Creek
This isn’t really a proper post, in the sense of writing a well thought out review, this is me talking of a bangin’ tune.

Mink Mussel Creek. They’re a newish Australian band and include Kevin Parker and Nick Albrook of Tame Impala. The track ‘Meeting Waterboy’ is absolutely brilliant. With the length of 6:51 it takes on a ‘Sea Within A Sea (The Horrors)’ turn halfway; evolving from a chillin’ time with those Cream-sque guitars that are only the norm when a band involves Tame Impala members (probably not a good thing to compare side projects of bands, but whatever) then surprising you and turning into an epic piece of music complete with Nick screaming into the microphone.

Just listen and tell me what you think.

<img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-lXBJIfTC7wE/T1W8aOdaJpI/AAAAAAAAAaI/OPmvfUYAZJc/video2423d824e6a3%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('f104a9f9-a27c-4819-96af-7c2498de2b9b'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-49439982225901586932012-02-24T23:26:00.002-08:002012-02-24T23:57:46.170-08:00Garage playlist.
Garage has been a genre that has been that has been close to my heart for the past few months. So last night I decided to make myself a playlist of sorts that included all of my favourite tracks from the genre.

So prepare to step back to the 60’s and have yourself a bogie down.

Talk Talk by The Music Machine

Jack The Riper By The One Way Streets

Louie Louie by The Kings Men

Psychotic Reaction by The Count Five

I Can’t Help Thinking of You by The Bucket

Way Down Below by The Gruesomes

Lucy Leave by Pink Floyd

The Witch by The Sonics

All Day And All Of The Night by The Kinks

Have Love, Will Travel by The Sonics

Revelation In Slow Motion By The Count Five

You Really Got Me by The Kinks

wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-73796248161920990682011-10-19T03:32:00.001-07:002011-10-19T03:32:49.672-07:00Live review: The Wombats 15th October.
Sorry for not updating in such a long time. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some reviews up and such soon!

Festival Hall, Melbourne was a set afire last Saturday night, the 15th of October. Coming to Australia for their third time an a year, The Wombats did not disappoint.

From the first song Our Perfect Disease, the band’s second albums opener, to the final song of the night, dubbed the “Melbourne face eater,” in which singer, Murph donned a panda mask both the band and crowd went insane.

Not only are the band talented live musicians, they can put on a really fun show; they have a such a great stage presence. However it wasn’t all fun and games. Anti-D showed a more sombre side to the band, and it was only fit that the whole crowd got their “paws” a-waving.

The Wombats are back in Australia for the Future Music festival in March.
wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-23119441381698034872011-09-01T02:05:00.001-07:002011-09-01T02:06:00.019-07:00New music from Florence + The Machine
We’ve finally been given a taste of new music from Florence + The Machine. Five minute epic track entitled ‘What The Water Gave Me,’ was released after lead singer Florence mentioned "something very special" on twitter.

The yet to be titled second Florence + The Machine record is due on the 7th of November. The ‘What The Water Gave Me’ is now available on iTunes.
wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-61584928018770916602011-08-06T03:32:00.001-07:002011-08-06T03:32:41.781-07:00Review: Moonfire by Boy & Bear.
Sydney’s indie-folk quintet Boy & Bear much anticipated debut Moonfire is finally upon us.

Even from the first track Lordy May, you can just tell that Moonfire is going to be a great album.

This album will get your feet a tapping to the rustic sounds of harmonicas, tambourines and banjos, mixed with that electric guitar that sets Boy & Bear apart from any other folk band. And not to forget the wonderful harmonies will have you swooning.

Moonfire by Boy & Bear; 4.5/5 stars.
wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-17619814196459349132011-02-12T02:15:00.001-08:002011-02-12T02:15:35.544-08:00Big Day Out 2011
Along with 52,000 other people and 100+ bands, I braved the 40 degree heat and headed to Melbourne annual Big Day Out.

First up; the Vines. Their set featured mostly old songs, spare Gimme Love a brand new track from their up coming album Future Primitive; to be released in April of this year. And despite the mercury already rising to 30+ the crowd danced and sung along to hit single Get Free.

We didn’t have to walk too far (the stages were right next together in fact) to catch our next pick; Little Red. I was surprised at the extent to which the crowd sung along, but it was nothing compared to when they played their hit single and number 2 song of Triple J’s hottest 100; Rock It.

This time it was quite a journey to see Children Collide, though we didn't actually see them, instead took up place under the shade of a tree and listened. I’ve already seen them live, so it didn’t bother me not to see them play, it’s all about the music isn’t it? And they were wonderful.

At this stage we had a break in our program to have our lunch and catch a little bit of shade. But soon after we caught Gyroscope. It was 3:00pm, one of the hottest parts of the day, but that didn’t dampen our sprits, though we were quite sweaty. The crowd (where I was at least) were mostly fans, so it was a great atmosphere to be around, and even I joined in when they played their hits. But unfortunately when they plated Breed Obsession, we were out of the mosh pit because it was far too hot.

We had a short break, in which we spent in the misting dome and then got to the blue stage early to see Birds Of Tokyo. Though I would have preferred to see them before they released their 2nd album, but they were still great live, and when they played their old stuff and Plans, the whole crowd sung in chorus.

We had yet another break while we waited to finally see my favourite band eve, Wolfmother. Coming up to the date, I was worried that the new line-up wouldn’t be as good as seeing the original one live (not that can say that I ever did, this was my first time seeing them) but I definitely wasn’t disappointed. At one point, I was quite close to tears, but I soon forgot and was moshing along with the rest of the Wolfies. They played all their wonderful songs from their old album with a few singles from their new one and I sung every single word. They even played a favourite of mine; Vagabond, and there was only one thing disappointing, was that they didn’t play Minds Eye, oh that and I didn’t get to touch Andrew Stockdale’s hand when he jumped off stage.

After the excitement of Wofmother, we dawdled along to catch the second half of Rammstein’s set. It was the biggest crowd that I had seen the day, and it even had pyrotechnics and a foam cannon for the song Pussy, to keep us entertained. Du Hast was quite the song, with an Australian crowd singing in German.

And now almost two weeks later, I still bear the mark of the sun, and will always remember my first Big Day Out.
wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-43507701742374208562010-12-02T22:24:00.000-08:002010-12-02T22:53:55.967-08:00Tokio Hotel are seeing halos.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 149px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqAa3-MtHUMMI4oV6phdOYA_csBn4rZAXg7UHxkS6lgSiQnPEBMKlM2IQ048pSJgGBR6Nljm8c7cl8DycYQROPjCbctPyuIx75Cv_A0DOze53SH8u4furv5d9WfnvynNxYQovT0W8E14c/s200/bets.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546345614190238002" />
Tokio Hotel has released a video for their latest song Hurricanes and Suns from their up coming album Best Of.

Check out the official video on the bands website, being all nostalgic, and taking a journey back through their five year career.

Though they sing "hey, don't you know, we've just begun" a lot of fans are speculating this is a good-bye video. You can get it in either a one big file, or separate track, though it is intended to be listened in one go.

Mind you, I haven't been able to download it as of yet because of what I guess, high demand, but check back in a few days, and it'll be as good as gold.

Now if you have never heard of Girl Talk, let me tell you about him. Now you could just say he's just a DJ that remixes songs, but he's different(as his shirt says). He doesn't make any new sounds, he just mashes up songs into very cool new ones. So i’m going to try and finish that now, with this! Ok now i know i said that i would have lists, but i’ve decided that i will have a weekly wrap sorta thing, which will be totally spontaneous.

Bang Bang Bang by Mark Ronson ft Q-Tip. This is currently my favourite song, it just makes me dance. I have also noticed songs with different languages are becoming not really commercialised, but more frequent *cough* We Speak No Amercano *cough.*

(Note to self: songs in different languages becoming popular? You can say that you were singing in German –Tokio Hotel- before there was ever such a thing called foreign language penetrating radio’s)

Do you know what? Twilight –as in team Edward- have really good sound tracks. On the latest for the Twilight Saga; Eclipse, it features the likes of The Black Keys, super group; The Dead Weather, Florence + The Machine, Vampire Weekend and Muse (full track list here)

Ok, i think that’s enough for me for the moment, and i know what you should do, COMMENT.
wolfchildsarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15979723255820770368noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1479143278768390282.post-44186598316249121102010-07-18T00:48:00.001-07:002016-06-01T17:58:04.978-07:00Patrick Wolf: The Bachelor – Album ReviewI got this album quite a while ago, the 10th of April to be exact, but as i listen to Blackdown;a track off The Bachelor, I feel the need to do an album review, so that’s what I’m going to do, and why not do it on here, this is a music blog after all!
The Bachelor; released on the 1st of June 2009, is Patrick Wolf’s fourth studio album. It is the first part of a double album Battle, in which the Conquer is the second half.
With the opening track Kriegspiel, the album is perceived as an electronic mess, but as it’s 47 second running time ends, it fades into Hard Times; one of the strongest tracks of the LP.
This album has a variation of styles from his usual classical Vs electronic style (The Bachelor and Count Of Casualty) the more deep; both lyrically and music wise (Blackdown and The Sun Is Often Out) and then there are these wonderful Irish highland tracks (Damaris and Thickets)
The Bachelor is like a journey through Irish mountains (yes I do realise that he is from England) on horse back,Ii might add, but I guess that’s what he wanted as he said in an interview with .. ok, iIcan’t find the interview, -how good am I? – but lets go on as if there was a quote there..yet, it is still relevant to the times, in Hard Times Patrick singing “show me some, revolution, and this battle will be won.”
In a phrase: Classical, yet relevant.
Rating : three and a half stars.
